Many of us love spending time in our backyard. Whether it be having friends and family over for a barbeque in the summer, or sitting around a firepit in winter, our lawns can offer us a fantastic green space in which to relax and unwind. But frequent entertainers may find their lawns looking a little sad after many feet (and paws) have been walking about on them

When in the market for a new lawn, it's worth considering how much time you wish to spend outside enjoying it. Other important factors to note include your climate, shade conditions and the level of maintenance you're willing to complete.

If you're somebody who enjoys regular social get-togethers, or have kids or pets that spend a lot of time on the lawn, then one solution could be to install a grass that can withstand high amounts of traffic. There are many different varieties of lawn that are able to bounce back from this kind of activity, so don't feel like your options are limited just because you're a habitual entertainer!

Kikuyu

This easy-going grass is a popular choice across Australia due to its drought tolerance and ability to handle foot traffic. Kikuyu can also be used for farms with grazing animals, and if it can handle multiple hooves then paws and little feet should be no worries! However, due to its fast-growing nature, this variety of grass has a habit of spreading and invading areas that it shouldn't, so it's important to keep an eye on it to make sure it stays only where wanted.

Couch

Another grass that can handle traffic is Couch. Couch grass's ability to tolerate large amounts of foot traffic has made it a popular choice for golf courses and parks. This grass variety grows well in full sun, but can be a little high-maintenance. Much like Kikuyu, Couch grass' ability to grow quickly and bounce back from wear also means it can be a relatively invasive grower, and you may find yourself pulling it out of garden beds where it doesn't belong.

Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky Bluegrass is a cool season grass that is best-suited for areas in Australia that have milder summers. This type of lawn is good at repairing itself, which contributes to its ability to handle high-traffic areas. Kentucky Bluegrass also has a great tolerance against both shady areas and frost, and has underground runners called rhizomes that help it to spread and repair itself. While it is good at handling the cold, this grass requires frequent watering, and isn't cut out for the hot conditions that much of Australia experiences.

If you enjoy playing host to a variety of outdoor events, or have kids and pets that love to run around on the lawn, then installing a high-traffic grass could be worth considering.
